Yesterday we took Mckenna back to see the plastic surgeon for a check on her cheek. I could tell as he looked at it that it wasn't exactly what he had expected. The stitch line separated a little...it's thin on each end but separated in the middle. He said that the separation and width was caused by the location and the fact that the wound is on her upper cheek which is obviously stretched and moved a lot when she talks, eats, smiles etc. and put some stress on the wound as it healed. He pinched it together when he was looking at it and I could tell that was what he had thought it would look like.
We discussed scar gels and he explained how they soften the tissue around the wound and also help with the current discoloration. At this point that is where we are at...applying gel to her scar a few times a day and massaging the area to help soften the hard scar tissue so it heals as smooth as possible...and wait. He said that in 6 months to a year we need to make the decision as her parents as to whether or not we're satisfied and content with how it looks and if not then we can bring her back and talk with him about options to improve the area. Hopefully it will heal well in the next year and we won't need to do anything. At the previous appointment the doctor made it sound like we would never meet again in the future and this would be the end of it...so I think the fact that he offered to meet with us in the future is an indicator that he thinks it could look better if the scar hadn't separated.
So we wait. And pray. And work on our perspective. And be thankful that it's just a scar.

Very thankful it's just a scar. We will also pray that it heals well and no other decisions will need to be visited. :o) Hang in there and please give her a big hug from us.
